BINBOGAMI GA! #9 - - Special Review

One of you lunatics described this show as being like the anime equivalent of FAMILY GUY and I'm seeing that the comparison apply to more than just the copious pop culture gags, now. Most times, I'm in favor of a show being fleet-footed with its pacing. This time, however, I think we had two premises that would've been great for two separate episodes; but they ended up getting short-shifted here after being squeezed so tightly together. As much I enjoy the unpredictability and odd pacing of the show, both qualities seem to work against it this time.

(Seriously, it's settled into a funny rhythm by this point, grooving back and forth between bawdy farces and melodramas with hard-hitting morality plays).

Seriously, I'll play armchair director here and say that I would've made one episode goofing on sports anime/manga (with PRINCE OF TENNIS as the focus, of course) and then one episode skewering "food fighters" like IRON CHEF, TORIKO, et al. Those are both genres (or sub-genres?) with a host of tropes to poke fun at, but we didn't get to really dig into either of them here.

And don't try telling me that this show is less concerned with parody than it is with characters arcs or some such. First, the number of sight gags referencing ONE PIECE, JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE and however many other titles I don't recognize comprise about 60% of air time. Second, Sakura and Binbo's relationship isn't exactly evolving. Sure, I think it's funny how this has turned into some twisted buddy comedy starring the snooty popular girl and her inept guardian angle... but I'm not missing the fact that Sakura seems to forget every lesson she learns in this story.

Watch this episode, "Eh?! You Said, 'After All This'?!" & "There's No Way That Happens After Just Two Minutes!!!!" here and decide for yourself, then read my comments on the previous episode here.
