Based on Matt Bondurant’s historical novel The Wettest County in the World, new movie Lawless tells the story of a band of bootlegging brothers who make whiskey in Prohibition-era Virginia.
“It’s a fascinating moment in America’s history,” says actor Jason Clarke, who plays moonshiner Howard Bondurant, in Wired’s video interview above. “It’s almost the last days of the Wild West.”
Directed by John Hillcoat (The Road) with a screenplay by Nick Cave, the period drama depicts the Bondurant family’s conflicts with law enforcement as well as big-city organized crime syndicates. Lawless boasts a stellar cast with Clarke, Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf playing the Bondurant brothers, and also stars Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce.
In case you’re not familiar with Hillcoat and Cave’s past collaborations, love, family and violence are consistent themes. They worked together on 2005′s The Proposition, a real Western masterpiece about family, love and the closing of the Australian frontier, and on 1988′s Ghosts … of the Civil Dead, a violent drama based on the true story of a maximum-security prison in lockdown. Cave, along with longtime music partner Warren Ellis, also scored the powerful music-scapes for these films.
We spoke to Clarke about his role in Lawless as well as Hillcoat and Cave’s working method. Clarke also answered the all-important question: Just what was Cave wearing on the Lawless set?
