Underwire: Avengers' Alternate Opening Pictures New York's Smoldering Ruins Aug 28th 2012, 21:27 Underwire Taking the Pulse of Pop Culture Avengers' Alternate Opening Pictures New York's Smoldering Ruins Aug 28th 2012, 20:38 Flashback alert: A somber alternate opening scene for The Avengers sets the story amid the smoldering ruins of New York City, some 48 hours after the “Tesseract event.” In the previously unseen sequence, shell-shocked S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Anita Hill (played by Cobie Smulders) tries to explain to investigators what the hell happened during the alien-versus-Avengers smackdown that formed the smash movie’s final act. In contrast to director Joss Whedon’s actual opening for The Avengers, which showed the Tesseract energy cube getting unleashed in outer space and causing mayhem at S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters, this subdued set-up pans in on New York City to show civilians huddling in the rubble as first responders race by overturned cars. Hill calls her boss Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) “reckless,” and bitterly muses, “Who would bring these people together and not expect what happened?” The alternative intro will be included in the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Avengers, slated for Sept. 25.
