Huh. I should've watched this on a double-feature with KOKORO CONNECT. There really is anime of every color, texture and stripe… and those stripes can get specific enough to evoke the experience of watching a high school play. I swear, I mean that in the best way possible.
Both titles have the feel of a bunch of talented kids putting on a show with very light supernatural elements and making the most of the sparse visual aids that the school's humble black box theater affords them. While I might initially question why an animated series would impose such limitations on its own scope, the talking heads were at least something entertaining and funny (as opposed to, say, STEINS: GATE, where they just kept blathering on).

I was pleasantly surprised to find that - - despite my grave concerns from the title - - the titular "Dusk Maiden of Amnesia" wasn't actually part of the dreaded Amnesiac Child Assassin trope. Actually, that Dusk Maiden of Amnesia isn't anywhere in sight, yet (unless the title's supposed to be some veiled reference to the horny poltergeist who's desperately looking for somebody to cop a feel on her?) Evidently, it's not memories that are missing here; it's a cast member.
You know, I don't know if I'll ever have the time to do so, but I would really like to re-watch this first episode. For once, I feel like that'd actually be a rewarding experience, since the shows plays a very fun (and theatrical) gimmick here by playing the same scenes twice over with the absence or addition of our ghostly cast member. Even while I clued in on the gag a little early, it's still a bit more... immediately gratifying than that question of whether the body swap in KOKORO CONNECT was a put-on or not.
And I do think it'd be even more… gratifying if I knew exactly what they were going for.
Watch this episode, "Ghost Maiden" below and decide for yourself.
